ANOTHER FALL, ANOTHER USED BOOK SALE – Friday October 10-Tuesday October 14
It may be a long winter and TV may continue to be uninspiring, so you will want plenty of reading on hand to see you through until Spring.

The “book store” will be open during regular library hours from Saturday to Monday. Friday’s sale is after hours, from 7 to 9 pm and is for MEMBERS ONLY. But don’t fret; you can join or rejoin that evening. (Members of the Ambler FRIENDS are also welcome.) Just line up by the flagpole to be admitted.

Tuesday is also a little bit different, since it is Bag Day. You may fill one of our grocery bags for only $4.00 from 10 am to 5:30 pm. (Special Value books not included in this deal.) Then we will close for 30 minutes and reopen at 6 pm for one frantic hour of FREE BOOKS!

HOW ABOUT THE LAST SALE , YOU ASK?

Jerry Scalley, honcho of the Spring Used Book Sale reports that $4,750.00 was raised. Of approximately 11,000 books, 66% were sold and 31% given away to bargain hunters at the end of the sale. There were 322 books left over, which was only 3 % of the starting number.

breaking news 10/16/08:
Fall Used Book Sale nets $4282

And, you ask, what happens to those books? We are in touch with other organizations needing donated materials and we hand them over gladly. Some of these are sent overseas to our troops or foreign orphanages, and we deliver some to state and county prisons.

A LETTER WE CHERISH –

Regarding books sent to prisons, we received a letter from a Graterford inmate who works in the prison’s library, assuring us that the donations were welcomed. He added “Thank you for thinking of our library and the minds that are in it.”

AND A FRIEND WE WILL MISS

With fondness, we remember Joann Carter, who passed away on March 14.  Joann was an active member of the FRIENDS who served on the Board of Directors and participated in our semi-annual sales. Her love of books was well known and, according to her son Peter, passed on to her children.

SO WHAT HAVE WE DONE LATELY?

In the 2007-2008 membership year, the FRIENDS donated $24,735. to the library as follows: $3,495.00 for the Encyclopedia of Science and Technology; $1,560. for a Dell 2400 MP Digital Projector; $180. for an HP Laserjet 1020 Printer; $800. for Children’s Literacy Computers; $1,2000. for Community Outreach Materials and Cart; $1,000.00 for Family Play Place Toy Replacements and Update; $2,500.00 for two additional bins for picture books; $6,000.

For 4 Public Internet Computers; $4,000. for shelving and furniture for the Young Adult Alcove; and $4,000. for shelves for the Circulation and Young Adult areas.

We are proud to say that, in the 14 years since the FRIENDS began, we have raised  $277,734. to provide materials and services for the best library around. We thank all of you for your help, donations and attendance at our sales, as you are definitely part of the team. If you are not yet a member, you can sign on for as little as $10. a year! We feel we cannot have too many FRIENDS!
