Sam Frederick, Facilitator

Regardless of our age, gender, personality, national origin, ethnicity, race, mixed race, religion, no religion, intelligence, unintelligence, education, lack of education, wealth, poverty, rectitude, imperfection, liberalism or conservatism .... at Socrates cafe ..

-we struggle to understand what influences have made us and others what we are and made us and others feel, think, and act the way we do.

- we struggle to identify our assumptions and how we came to them, ask fellow members to comment on them from their experience, and help our fellow members to identify and understand their assumptions.

- we want to know what others' feelings and beliefs are -- and when they differ from our own, to find out how they came to be and consider if and find room to expand our own in light of our new understanding.

- we want to know, by asking questions of each other, whether there are experiences you had or things you learned that are different from the experiences we had and things we learned that, when we hear you talk about them, might cause us to give up our stereotypes.

- we are all experts in our own lives - though not necessarily in what we have understood from them, nor certainly in other people's lives.  We want to improve our understanding of ourselves, others and the world through "reality checks" with our fellow members who have different experiences, different perspectives, and understandings to share that may benefit us.

- we look to see if there may be answers in ourselves.

- we discover accomplishments, strengths and good fortune that we didn't realize we had.
