What do puffballs, dead man's fingers, fairy rings, soft drinks, destroying angels, powdery mildews, ringworm, corn smut, Beano, stink horns, morels, truffles, dandruff, beer, shiitakes, chestnut trees, bread, stone-washed jeans, and Roqueffort cheese all have in common? They all involve a fungus! Fungi are everywhere and affect us everyday. We eat and enjoy some. Others will kill us if eaten. Some fungi cause diseases. Some cure diseases. Many plants cannot live without fungi. Some plants cannot live because of them.

Photography Exhibit: Ambler Through the Lens

We gardeners are excited about and make plans to increase the diversity of plants in our gardens and landscapes. A whole new level of appreciation arises when we learn to recognize that many of the plants we grow and see growing in the wild are related to each other, as in a family. For example, alyssum, broccoli, and radishes all belong to the mustard family. Carrots, dill, and poison hemlock are related to the carrot family.

The lecture tells us the story of the Penn Museum's Sphinx ( the largest sphinx in the entire Western Hemisphere ) from its discovery in Egypt at Memphis in the early 20th century, its subsequent transport to Philadelphia concluding with a behind the scenes look at the engineering and human effort involved in moving such an object, both monumental and priceless in today's world. What is a Sphinx? What did a Sphinx represent to the ancient Egyptians? How did they move it? Let's find out!
